Abstract

This paper was written with the intention of accessing the way of subjectification executed by Yi Chung-jun, focusing on his short story "small free men"(키 작은 자유인). The anecdote of the 'crab sag' that appears in "small free man" has a weird ethical color. This is caused by a combination of surplus-ethics and the subsequent amorality. Here, surplus- ethics is an inevitable product that arises in the process of ethical subjectification. The subject is a responsible person and the surplus-ethics as a willingness to overtake one's share of responsiblity is an indicator of the will to be a subject in that respect. The the 'crab sag' story has three ethical levels. These complexities are primarily related to the ironical nature of shame itself, which corresponds to the attribute of the utilitarian ethics that capitalist modernity has as its ethical heart. It is also related to context of the poverty and collective will to overcome it in 1950s Korea. His expression that the poverty is like the original sin leads us to the fact that the poverty as a complexity of shame and attachment is an ironical object to an ethical subject.
