번역을 서로 다른 언어의 코드 전환이라고 정의할 때 번역의 역사는 문자가 등장 한 이후에 시작된 매우 오래된 언어행위이다. 그러나 오늘날까지도 가장 논란이 많은 연구 분야로 남아 있다. 그 이유 중의 하나는 번역이 개별 언어 연구라기보다는 서로 다른 두 언어를 대상으로 하는 언어행위이기 때문이다. 또 다른 이유는 번역이 언어의 문제이기는 하지만 번역과정에 언어외적인 문제가 개입하기 때문이다. 번역이 독립적인 이론과 연구 대상을 갖춘 독립된 학문으로 발전하기 시작한 것은 20세기 후반의 일이다. 세계화 덕분에 번역은 21세기의 중요한 외국어교육의 과제가 되었고 외국어교육의 한 방안으로 제기되고 있다. 통시적 시각에서 살펴본 번역의 다양성은 번역교육과 번역평가의 기준을 설정하는데 중요한 준거를 제공한다. 번역은 무엇보다도 언어의 문제이기 때문에 언어이론의 발달이 번역이론의 발전에 지대한 영향을 준다. 번역을 바라보는 다양한 시각과 이론은 올바른 번역을 위한 첫걸음이라고 판단한다. 본 논문이 통시적 시각에서 번역을 살펴본 중요한 이유이다. 출발어/도착어 형태는 주어진 시기의 개별적 입장뿐만 아니라 집합적 입장에 따라 상이하게 관찰되며 역사적으로 얼마만큼 원본에 충실히 직역해야 하는가에 대한 생각이 시대에 따라 끊임없이 변해왔다. 고대 이래 지속되는 출발어/도착어 지향에 관한 논쟁은 결론이 나지 않은 채 현재 전 세계적으로 급증하면서 수많은 언어/문화 접촉의 21세기 글로벌 시대에 의사소통은 번역을 통해야만 가능하다. 번역은 주어진 개념 자체에 문제가 내재해 있기 때문에 정의하려는 순간 문제가 생기며 그 범주가 너무나 방대하여 기술하는 것이 쉬운 일만은 아니다. 번역 연구는 모든 이론적 연구가 그렇듯 각 시기의 번역 방법, 번역 양상 등 통시적 고찰을 통해본 바 독자적 학문이 되기까지 과정이 간단하지 않으며 번역의 역사적인 역할과 현실적 가치는 절대 과소평가 될 수 없을 것이다. 우리나라도 번역 교육과정이 확대되는 가운데 번역은 여러 문맥상황, 문화적 의미 를 출발어/도착어 사이에 등가를 찾도록 하는 번역교육이 본격적으로 이루어져야 할 시기인 것은 분명하다. 번역은 국제간의 교류나 국가 발전에 있어 점차 그 중요성이 커지고 통번역 교육의 수요가 늘고 있기에 번역에 대한 통시적 접근 방법을 통해 합리적인 이론의 번역 방법이 심도 있게 연구되어야 한다.
