Abstract

During the Joseon Dynasty, various rhyme books (韻書) were compiled that recorded Chinese character pronunciations in Hangeul. These works are vital primary sources for studying Sino-Korean phonology, yet differences in compilation purpose, date, scope, and classification systems hinder direct comparison and diachronic analysis. The absence of systematic databases further limits interoperability and usability. This study designs a database schema to comprehensively store and manage phonological data from Joseon-era rhyme books. It first analyzes the structure and variations of each source and identifies the practical data needs of researchers. The schema structures relationships among core entities—Rhyme Books, Chinese Characters, Rhyme Categories (韻目), Initial Consonants (字母), and Recorded Characters (登載漢字). Phonological features such as tone (聲調), grade (等), open/closed syllable (開合), voicing (淸濁), and the five sound categories (五音) are normalized into reference tables. A three-digit code combining language type, user category, and notation method standardizes classifications across Korea, China, and Japan. This framework provides a robust basis for cross-rhyme-book comparison, correspondence analysis with Middle Chinese, and diachronic study of Sino-Korean. It is expected to advance digital Sino-Korean phonology research and broaden rhyme book–based studies, including comparative analyses of Chinese character pronunciations in East Asia.
