Abstract

This study rearranges the scattered narratives of "Three Bathers" from the past and present, applying Michel Foucault’s concept of parrhesia to trace the protagonist Xiao-tiao’s journey of speech. An analysis of the novel’s recurring theme of "silence-speech" reveals that Xiao-tiao, from childhood to adulthood, faces social and psychological constraints that impede her speech, but also finds moments where speaking becomes possible. Xiao-tiao's speech goes beyond a mere confession of guilt; it narratively exposes the inflection points where the possibility of speaking emerges despite social and psychological constraints demanding silence. Xiao-tiao demonstrates parrhesia by taking risks with the courage to speak the truth and communicating with a trustworthy listener. This analysis is significant as it provides a foundation for a more positive and proactive interpretation of the novel’s ending by reading the work through the new lens of the ethics of speech, a topic not adequately addressed in existing research on female or guilt narratives. It also expands the perspective of Tie-Ning studies. This research ultimately highlights how the protagonist’s act of speaking becomes a transformative and empowering ethical practice.
