Abstract

The concept domain of ‘SOFT-HARD’ consists of four variables and ten frames. Its derived meanings primarily represent evaluations of a person’s personality, attitude, or tone, characterized by a clear distinction between positive and negative connotations. In Korean, from a conceptualization perspective, the ‘soft’ domain centers on ‘부드럽다’ (soft), which encompasses all ten frames as the core member. The rest form a dispersed system: ‘보드랍다’ describes body parts, textiles, and hair; ‘연하다’ and ‘무르다(물렁/말랑하다)’ describe food textures; and ‘푹신하다’ pertains to textiles. Among the domains of food, clothing, and shelter, the food and textile frames are especially prominent. The ‘hard’ domain is dominated by ‘단단하다’ and ‘탄탄하다’, covering eight frames as the primary system. Regarding derived meanings, in the ‘soft’ domain, the positive and negative evaluative meanings of ‘부드럽다’ and ‘무르다’ stand in opposition, while in the ‘hard’ domain, those of ‘단단하다’ and ‘딱딱하다’ do so. In Chinese, the ‘soft’ domain is conceptually centered on ‘軟’, which encompasses all ten frames as the core member. The dispersed system includes: ‘柔软’ related to plants, ‘松软’ and ‘绵软’ describing soft cottony textures, and ‘软和’ describing dough. The ‘hard’ domain, represented by ‘硬’, covers nine frames excluding granular matter. Its dispersed system, based on core morpheme meanings, includes ‘坚硬’ for hard solids and ‘僵硬’ for entities implying rigidity with an aspect of inflexibility or stiffness in animate and inanimate objects. Regarding derived meanings, the ‘soft’ domain shows opposition between positive and negative evaluations of ‘软, 软和, 柔和, 绵软’ and between ‘软,松软,绵软’. Both ‘软’ and ‘绵软’ convey positive and negative evaluations, whereas ‘软和’ and ‘柔和’ denote only positive meanings. The ‘hard’ domain features opposing positive and negative evaluations of ‘坚硬’ and ‘僵硬’.
