The study focuses on modality differences in expressions that exhibit the writer's argument or appeal in Korean newspapers, Japanese newspapers and newspapers translated into Japanese through corpus analysis. The expression ‘~야 한다(ya handa)’ was widely used in Korean newspapers, while expressions such as ‘べきだ(bekida: equivalent to ~야 한다)'and 'たい(tai: equivalent to ~싶다)/ほしい(hosii: equivalent to ~기 바란다)’ were found in similar proportion. On the other hand, the expression ‘なければならない(nakerebanaranai: equivalent to ~지 않으면 안 된다)’ was most frequently used in newspapers translated into Japanese, while expressions such as ‘たい(tai: equivalent to ~싶다)/ほしい(hosii: equivalent to ~기 바란다)’ were rarely found in such newspapers. Unlike news reports that just deal with the facts, rhetorical writings such as news editorials must translated with a strategy that considers the modality in expressions. An in-depth study on modality is required in order to establish translation strategies that can deliver editorials effectively with a natural approach to the reader.
