A success of communication in a written text is closely linked to what attitude its writer have toward its putative readers. For the reason, a writer tends to choose delicately linguistic resources which can shape the attitude. Unfortunately, however, the delicate choices compound translator’s hardship, for the attitudinal meanings can be differently interpreted by the readers with different cultures. This study explores how ST writer’s attitude in delivering messages is changed in the process of Korean-English translation of news editorials. In particular, it mainly focuses on request expressions, key linguistic resources determining the attitude in news editorials, arguing attitude shifts in pragmatic and text structural perspectives. For this study, 60 editorial texts and their translations provided by three leading news agencies are analysed under an analysis framework given by Blum-Kulka et al.(1989). The analyses are made to explore the overall tendency of the attitude shifts in Korean-English news editorial translation; and to examine how text structuring elements are related to the attitude shifts. The result of the analyses shows that a translator tends to prioritize conveying messages clearly rather than finding pragmatic equivalents when translating linguistic resources for the attitude; and that the structural features of the text influences translators’ choice in shaping the attitude.
