영상의 더빙 방식이 만든 문화적 신화와 왜곡된 실재 분석 - 80년대 우리말 녹음 TV 프로그램을 중심으로 -

본 논문은 더빙 방식이 동영상 콘텐츠의 언어 번역 매체일 뿐 아니라 문화의 시대적인 소통과 이에 따른 신화를 만들어온 영향력 있는 수단으로 기능해왔음을 논의한다. 각 가정에 컬러텔레비전이 보급되며 해외에서 제작된 외화시리즈들이 활발히 유통되었던 80년대는 우리나라에서 더빙 방식의 사용이 전성기를 누린 시대였다. 당시 수입된 텔레비전 프로그램의 ‘우리말 녹음’ 방식을 통해 자연스럽게 전달된 타문화와 이 전달과정에서 은폐되거나 왜곡된 실재를 분석하고, 더빙이 만들어낸 문화적 신화와 환영 및 서구문화와 일본문화의 수용에 미친 영향을 살펴보았다. 더빙은 나치즘이나 파시즘과 같이 강력한 정치 체제에서 선호한 방식으로, 원본의 소리와 언어를 삭제하고 자국의 언어를 덧입히는 과정에서 사전검열과 조작을 통해 이데올로기 전파의 도구로 사용되었다. 지역의 방언이 다양한 나라의 경우, 언어의 표준화와 단일화를 위한 수단이었으며, 자국의 정서와 현실에 맞게 내용을 변형하는 토착화의 형식을 취했다. 이처럼 더빙은 언어의 보편성, 체제에 따른 검열, 수입된 콘텐츠의 현지화 사이의 경계에서 끊임없이 줄타기하며 문화전달 매체로서 정치적, 사회적 기능을 수행해왔다. 80년대의 ‘우리말 녹음’ 방송프로그램을 되짚어봄으로써 더빙 방식을 문화적 신화를 해체하는 하나의 열쇠이자 번안과 현지화 전략을 통해 수입국과 수출국의 권력관계를 전복할 수 있는 재영토화의 전술로 재해석했다. 나아가, 90년대 이후 대중매체에서 점차 사라져가는 더빙 방식을 여전히 유효한 영상매체로 예술 매체와 뉴미디어에 접목할 가능성을 더빙의 모순과 오류로 인식되는 휴지기와 접합점의 틈새, 서로 다른 신체와 목소리의 조합에서 오는 불일치와 간극에서 발견할 수 있음을 제언한다.
Abstract
This paper looks beyond the general concept of dubbing as a screen translation method and discusses it as an influential medium for enabling cultural communication and creating cultural myths and illusions. Dubbing was the main translation method in the 1980s in Korea when color televisions were widely distributed and many television programs were imported from America and Japan. By examining some of the popular imported television programs dubbed in Korean, this research focuses on how the foreign culture was delivered and readily adopted by dubbing as well as how certain realities were concealed or warped in the process. Dubbing was strategically used under strong political systems such as Nazism and Fascism to apply censorship and spread ideology. It was also a tool to standardize the national language in countries where people used a variety of provincial dialects, and the content was often domesticated for the target audience. As a cultural translation method, with its political and social functions, dubbing lies on the boundaries among linguistic norms, censorship, and indigenization. Through research on dubbed programs from the 1980s, dubbing is reevaluated as one of the key methods of deconstructing the cultural myths as well as a reterritorialization tactic to subvert the power structure of countries that import and export media content. Furthermore, although dubbing became less preferred in Korea after the 1990s, this paper proposes extended possibilities of how dubbing can still be a creative medium for time-based artwork and new media by directing the attention to its obscurities and errors, awkward pauses and gaps, and traces of imperfection in dubbing's patchwork of different voices and images.
