이 논문은 비-극장의 영화 기억을 한국영화사 연구의 범주로 포괄하는 시도의 하나로서, 1980~90년대 한국 텔레비전의 외화 더빙판 제작에 참여한 인물들의 구술을 바탕으로 그 문화사적 의미를 고찰한다. 원본의 외국어 대사를 한국인 성우의 목소리로 대체하는 더빙은 번역과 녹음연출, 그리고 성우의 숙련된 연기가 통합되어 새로운 버전을 생산하는 현지화의 과정이라 할 수 있다. 제작진은 스크린 페르소나와 목소리의 조화, 화면 속 배우의 입술의 움직임과 목소리 연기의 동기화, 자연스러운 한국어 입말의 녹음을 구현하고자 했다. 더빙판 제작은 매체의 특성, 방송 제도, 문화적 차이 등을 고려하며 진행되었으며, 한국 수용자의 일상과 언어생활, 문화 환경에 밀착한 번역을 지향했다. 때로는 방송의 공공성을 명분으로 내세운 심의를 의식해 번역의 남용이 진행되기도 했다. 더빙판 제작진의 구술에서는 한편으로는 한국 대중에게 ‘선진적인’ 외국 문화와 예술을 소개한다는 자부심을, 다른 한편으로는 정선된 한국어 번역과 숙련된 목소리 연기로 외국영화를 순화시켜서 한국의 문화적 주체성을 지키는 역할을 해왔다는 자부심을 확인할 수 있었다. 1980~90년대 텔레비전 외화의 한국어 더빙판은 극장 관람과는 다른 영화 경험을 제공하며 대중의 문화적 교양을 표준화하는 데 작용했다.
Abstract
In an endeavor to incorporate non-theatrical cinema memory as a facet of Korean film historiography, this study delves into its cultural-historical significance, drawing from oral history testimonies of individuals involved in the production of Korean-dubbed versions of foreign films aired on television during the 1980s and 1990s. Dubbing, as the process of replacing original foreign-language dialogues with Korean voiceovers, epitomizes a form of localization entailing translation, recording, and the nuanced performances by voice actors to craft a localized reproduction. The dubbing team endeavored to harmonize screen personas with voice renditions, synchronize the on-screen actor’s lip movements with voice actor’s vocal performances, and capture the essence of natural Korean speech. Production of dubbed versions was meticulously tailored to suit the medium’s characteristics, broadcasting system, and cultural nuances, aiming to furnish translations reflective of Korean audiences’ daily life, linguistic life, and cultural ethos. At times, the translation was abusive, conscious of censorship in the name of public broadcasting. Oral histories of dubbing personnel underscore a dual sense of pride: one in introducing “advanced” foreign culture and art to Korean audiences, and another in preserving Korean cultural identity through judicious translation choices and adept voice acting. The Korean-dubbed versions of foreign films broadcasted on television during the 1980s and 1990s provided a distinct cinematic encounter compared to theatrical screenings, concurrently contributing to the standardization of cultural sensibilities among the public.
