Abstract

Recently, various experimental projects based on the concept of community art that mediate art to vitalize local communities and create new social values are emerging. Based on this trend, various types of projects are currently being planned by diverse cities and cultural organizations to induce citizen participation. However, the research to induce active responses from participants based on vivid understanding of community art has not been actively conducted. Therefore, ‘Beachcombing’, a part of community art that collects beach waste and develops art works in various coastal cities, was set as the research object. Also, the cognitive structure of 12 citizens as interviewees about this community art project is explored through an in-depth interview process using Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique, and a consensus map is constructed. The data extracted from the entire interview was analyzed through the use of NVivo 12, a qualitative research analysis program, and a total of 13 major concepts(environmental protection activity, artistry, self-satisfaction, community activity, change of perception, sustainability, dynamism, awareness sharing, eco-friendliness, vitality, experience, harmony, and service) were derived. The collective themes constituting the entire contents were classified into ‘Beachcombing for rethinking ecological environment awareness’ and ‘Beachcombing as a community art activity’. Finally, this study conducted the study of beachcomming as ‘experience-community-activity-self-satisfaction’ and ‘experience-artisticity-environmental protection activity-self-satisfaction’ through the construction of a shared conceptual map based on the analysis of the frequency of connection of each component and it was confirmed that it was recognized. This research can serve as a theoretical basis for cultural planners and researchers who conduct community art projects, and will explore more cases based on the concept of community art.
