Abstract

The purpose of this study is to present a new perspective on Kim Whanki's Dot painting by analyzing the formative features of Kim Whanki's Dot painting from a phenomenological point of view. The method and procedure of the study were first explored on the pictorial application of phenomenology based on the literature on Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology, and the text analysis method of Kim Whanki's diary and Dot painting was conducted. Phenomenology is a study of which interest lies in relationship between subject and world, Merleau-Ponty says that painting shows the process of the experienced perception well. The subject interacts with the world through the experiential process of perception, and the body acts as a medium and the artist reveals the invisible world behind the visible world in the process of transforming the world perceived through sight among the bodily senses. Kim Whanki's Dot painting is characterized by the repetitive arrangement of dots, and the repetitive dotting can be viewed as an experiential perception of the world. Kim Whanki's immersion in nature, an object that reflects her relationship with the world, brings the subject of Kim Whanki and nature into one, and in his Dot painting, nature is revealed as a visualization of the invisible world, not the natural as it appears. The dots of Dot painting permeated in various forms add depth to the space, and the rhythmically repeated touch of the brush creates a three-dimensional movement, constantly creating new screens. In addition, the synesthesia through the intersection of hearing and sight in the work shows the mutual fluid relationship between the subject and the connected world. Finally like the concept of phenomenology in which subject and object are intertwined and related through sensory perception and expanded, Kim Whanki created a Dot painting showing lyrical modernity through the formative features of invisible objects, depth of space, intrinsic rhythm, and connection of senses. He left a great achievement in Korean abstract painting.
