Abstract

Through the lens of Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological theory of perception, this paper examines the paintings(1973-2011) of American abstract artist Pat Steir. Drawing on the conceptual frameworks of embodiment, materiality, and the flow of perception, it offers a philosophical and aesthetic interpretation of Steir’s paintings with a particular focus on the abstract elements embedded within her visual languages. Steir employs gravity, velocity, chance and the gestural movement of the body to construct a sensuous space that reconfigures conventional visual and representational frameworks. According to Merleau-Ponty’s theory, the body functions as a perceptual medium-both embodied and expressive-through which the world is perceived, enacting a dual existence as both the seer and the seen. Steir’s large canvases engage in a corporeal dialogue with the world as embodied perception materializes through traces of gestural brushstrokes, transforming the canvas into a site where being and sensation converge. The artist’s massive gestures emerge as finely rendered lines that reflect her own movement leaving visible traces behind upon the dark blue-painted wall. This perceptual arrangement reveals the interlacing gazes of subject and object, offering viewers a living illusionistic space. Furthermore, Steir’s paintings closely align with Merleau-Ponty’s later philosophical concept of ‘flesh,’ functioning as signs that perceive and respond to the the world from an inner realm of condensed experience. Her abstract forms, symbols, and flowing pigments visually articulate a field of reciprocal immanence between subject and world. Just as Paul Cézanné’s compositions reveal perceptual depth through interpenetrating colors and forms, Steir’s works compose layered structures where bodily rhythms and sensory perception converge. This study illustrates how her paintings envision a world of embodied seeing, where sensation and thought converge through Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology.
