Abstract
Contemporary art demands theories which understand and explain itsvariety of expressions. One of the urgent tasks assigned to aestheticsmight be rethinking aesthetic experience. One of the remarkable characteristicsof theories of aesthetic experience is a tendency to (1) limitaesthetic experience to mental faculties or states, and (2) disentanglethe subject from the object. The mental or the psychic is a kind ofattitude that a subject assumes in order to have aesthetic experience. While theories of aesthetic experience propose with different terms, their widely shared grounds are such mental powers, rational capacitiesand internal reflection. Accordingly, most of accounts that dealsaesthetic experience consider aesthetic object as existing autonomouslyseparate from experiencing subject. Perhaps we might have alternativeview if we dig into the source of aesthetic experience focusing onperception. If we take up Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology of perception, then itopens the possibility of new way of our approach to the issues onaesthetic experience. Merleau-Ponty argues that we should suspend ourobjective thought and 'return to phenomena.' The perceiving subject isnot a being, isolated in the inner world, causally reacts to externalstimulation but involves in the world in direct and practical manner. Thus the subject of aesthetic experience should be considered as anembodied consciousness that underlies pure consciousness, and aestheticobject cannot be viewed separate from the perceiving subject, nor can experiencing subject be considered in isolation from perceptionand action.
