Abstract

This study analyzes consumer demand for the packaging design of health functional foods based on the Kano model and explores strategies to improve user satisfaction and enhance brand competitiveness through design optimization. The study targeted 273 Korean consumers aged between 18 and 65 who had experience purchasing health functional foods. A questionnaire was conducted based on 24 detailed indicators across four design dimensions: visual, informational, functional, and attractive. The survey items were structured according to the Kano model’s positive and negative question pairs, and a 5-point Likert scale was applied. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 28.0 to assess reliability and validity, which enabled the extraction of key elements influencing user satisfaction. The analysis results showed that basic informational elements—such as ingredient labeling, usage instructions, and package illustrations—were categorized as Must-be Quality attributes. While they do not increase satisfaction directly, their absence significantly reduces the user experience. Functional aspects including certification marks, sealing performance, portability, and ease of opening were identified as One-dimensional Quality attributes, which had a direct positive impact on satisfaction when fulfilled. Eco-friendly materials, universal design, and color composition were found to be Attractive Quality attributes that enhance brand image and consumer loyalty, although they are not essential conditions for satisfaction. In contrast, elements such as material type, style, and manufacturer information were classified as Indifferent Quality attributes, indicating that they have little effect on user satisfaction and can be flexibly adjusted based on design resources and budget. In conclusion, this study confirms that the Kano model can be effectively applied to the demand analysis of packaging design for health functional foods and provides both practical and theoretical implications for product development and brand communication strategies in the industry.
