Abstract
The widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles is reducing the burden of manual driving and enabling a new form of user experience by allowing passengers to engage freely with content inside the vehicle. However, the frequent occurrence of system malfunctions and accident cases has heightened users’ anxiety and vigilance, increasing psychological unease independently of technical safety. While content consumption and other experiences inside the vehicle are now technically feasible, users often struggle to achieve full immersion due to lingering psychological discomfort and a lack of emotional security. Traditional approaches that are centered on engineering have focused on identifying the causes of system failures and improving operational precision, thereby contributing to the establishment of functional trust. However, these methods fall short in addressing emotional security and trust formation from the user’s perspective, especially in terms of providing psychological reassurance during interaction that occurs in real time. This study highlights the role of continuous interaction based on psychological communication between autonomous vehicles and users in fostering trust, and seeks to apply this perspective to the design of user experiences in autonomous vehicles. Through a literature review, the study adapts the causal model of “psychological communication–self-efficacy–trust–loyalty” to the context of autonomous vehicle user experience, and analyzes how emotional interaction and predictable system responses influence trust formation. In addition, an analysis based on real-world cases is conducted to identify user experience design elements for trust formation, and to propose a theoretical foundation for future user experience strategy development in autonomous vehicles. This study argues for an integrated user experience approach that goes beyond technical safety to incorporate emotional security and trust formation as critical factors. By doing so, it seeks to enhance both user immersion in content inside the vehicle and the broader acceptance of autonomous vehicle technologies as trustworthy and emotionally responsive systems.
