Abstract

The purpose of this study is to present a design process for the development of purpose-based mobility (PBM) that organically combines design and engineering to respond to the demand for robot manufacturing efficiently, and to apply it to the actual manufacturing process to verify its validity. The subject of the study is a PBM prototype with a modular structure, and the requirements for applying the robot industry were derived by analyzing the existing design process and high-mix low-volume production method of various types. In addition, a production method was prepared that considers the combination of the standardized chassis and the cabin that can cope with indoor and outdoor environments, a cabin was produced using FDM 3D printing, and a combination structure of the base platform and application module was designed. The manufacturing results are summarized as follows. 1) PBM was able to flexibly respond to various service purposes by adopting a combined structure between a standardized base platform and an application module. 2) Design change and customization were easy by overcoming the limitations of mold manufacturing through FDM 3D printing. 3) A standard chassis specification (width less than 800mm and height 64mm) and a sensor and module arrangement structure that can cope with indoor and outdoor environments were established. 4) Through collaboration between designers and engineers, a design that reflects structural safety, design completeness, and functional arrangement was implemented. 5) Customization of color and size that can reflect consumer needs became possible, and design consistency was maintained even after customization. 6) The modular structure contributed to reducing manufacturing costs and improving market change responsiveness, and provided the basis for stable operation of the robot industry. 7) The safety required for actual commercialization is verified through chassis durability simulations and driving experiments.
