Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze changes in techniques employed by Korean contemporary printmakers over the past 30 years and to assess their significance. The research focused on works presented in the annual exhibitions of the Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association, which were used to infer broader trends. Printmaking techniques were classified into four categories: orthodox, extended-range, mixed, and print-media style. Works exhibited between 1995 and 2024 were analyzed accordingly. The findings indicate a marked decline in traditional methods, with the exception of convex printing, which showed an increase. Within extended printmaking, digital printing techniques predominated, while other approaches were limited. Mixed printmaking, combining diverse techniques, rose substantially. Although print-media style works—such as installations and video art incorporating transfer and reproduction—were fewer in number, they reflected growing media diversity. From this, four trends were identified. First, the combined use of multiple techniques corresponds with broader currents in contemporary art, including diversification, boundary dissolution, and integration. Second, digital media has strongly influenced technique, production processes, and the emergence of print-media works. Third, despite the expansion of media, emphasis on the expressive value of established methods such as convex and mixed printmaking persists. Fourth, the concept of transfer and reproduction, once limited to plate-based practice, has expanded through new media and artist intervention, pointing to further evolution. This study clarifies these shifts in technique and contributes to contemporary printmaking research by broadening understanding of stylistic and technical developments in Korea.
