Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the current state and significance of mixed-technique printmaking works that have recently increased in Korean print exhibitions. The research employed frequency analysis and content analysis to identify tendencies in mixed printmaking by collecting works from the annual catalogs of the Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association over the past 30 years. The collected works were classified into seven types according to the manner in which printmaking techniques were combined with other forms and then analyzed accordingly. The results indicate that although combinations involving traditional and expanded printmaking techniques accounted for the largest proportion in the early period, their share gradually decreased to the 40% range after the mid-2000s, while still remaining the most dominant category. Other types were used in diverse combinations, from which four primary tendencies and implications were identified. First, the overall increase in multi-technique combinations reflects an expansion of expressive methods, procedural convenience, and a dissolution of boundaries among printmaking techniques, aligning with broader trends in contemporary art where various media intersect. Second, although digital print–based combinations emerged in response to technological change, a strong preference for traditional and expanded printmaking techniques executed through hand processes persisted. Third, the intermittent appearance of works incorporating objects, relief elements, and collage suggests attempts to transcend the limits of the planar print and engage with spatial or sculptural expression. Fourth, approximately 60% of mixed-technique works were created through processes in which images gradually emerged during production rather than being predetermined and reproduced, thereby revealing characteristics of process-oriented art. By re-examining mixed-technique works—now a major tendency in contemporary Korean printmaking—this study broadens the scope of research on Korean contemporary print practice.
