Abstract

This study is intended to explain a recent crisis in printmaking, to redefine the concept of medium to preserve its specific field, and to provide cognitive conditions for its functioning as a creative tool for contemporary art making. Multiplicity and Indirectness, the traditional characteristics of printmaking, are threatened by digital technologies. Also, the distinct boundary between printmaking and other media has been blurred by convergence of genres. In this situation, discussions about printmaking seem to expand the boundary of medium excessively, or inversely, to reproduce past rules. To address this situation, this study refers to post-media theories on reinvention of traditional media. The theories that avoid disconnection amid the flow in which media specificity is denied due to the resistance to the Flatness of painting and that recall the formative value of art, which can be easily discarded in digital art, can be applied to printmaking. In the current printmaking environment, the Multiplicity tends to be skewed towards numerical analysis and the Indirectness tends to be reduced to physical elements. These biased concepts can be changed into the unit repeatability and the flat image. The unit repeatability moves focus from the function to the artist’s behavior and formativeness of printmaking, enabling aesthetic and formative considerations on the medium even in the situation where the role of multiplicity-related printmaking is dismissed. In addition, the flat image allows attention to results instead of the condition of Indirectness, and remains as a unique object of printmaking even with the historical change in technology. The result of study has confirmed that the reinvention of printmaking can preserve the specific role of the medium, create the environment where artists can produce artworks freely from conceptual constraints, and activate research on medium specificity that has been stalled since the mechanical reproduction theory and reduced by current discussions on digital convergence.
