Abstract

Chinese characters, as a logographic writing system, embody unique cultural and aesthetic values. In particular, the design and application of Chinese typefaces in the field of visual design should not be limited to mere form modification or rearrangement, but rather represent an integrated realization of character shapes, meanings, and cultural context. The Six Scripts (liùshū, 六書) theory, the earliest framework of Chinese character construction, provides cultural and historical guidance for typeface design and offers contemporary application value. This study analyzes Chinese typeface design and application through the lens of the Six Scripts.By reviewing relevant literature, the study examines the concepts and development of the Six Scripts and interprets the structural logic of the six methods of character formation—pictographic, indicative, associative compound, phono-semantic compound, mutually explanatory, and phonetic loan. It further explores their relationship with typeface design, identifies key design features, and proposes an analytical framework for evaluating design works. Case studies include works by Kan Tai-Keung, Song Zhengjie, Wang Zhihong, and Miaoshou Huichao. The findings show that the Six Scripts theory not only provides a theoretical foundation but also shapes typeface styles and methods, resulting in qualities of unity, normativity, legibility, and uniqueness. Its adaptability across multiple media confirms its strong compatibility with modern design. Consequently, the traditional Six Scripts theory enables a creative transformation from the structural principles and logic of ideographic characters to their visual realization in contemporary design, while also providing valuable cultural references for the development of Chinese typeface design.
