Abstract

This study empirically examined the influence of Chinese character form transformations on three graphic effect factors—Aesthetic quality, Visual saliency, and Playfulness—and explored the formative potential of Chinese character typography. As characters with complex structures and diverse strokes, Chinese characters can undergo various transformation techniques such as rotation, pixelation, and distortion, functioning as unique visual resources in visual communication. In the experiment, stroke complexity (simple vs. complex) and type of form transformation (static, rotation, pixelation, distortion) were set as independent variables, while the three affective dimensions—Aesthetic quality, Visual saliency, and Playfulness—served as dependent variables in a repeated-measures analysis. The results revealed that form transformation had significant effects on aesthetic quality and playfulness, with pixelation yielding the highest mean ratings and distortion the lowest. For visual saliency, both transformation type and stroke complexity exerted significant effects; characters with simpler structures were recognized more rapidly than those with complex strokes. These findings indicate that form transformation acts as a core determinant of affective response, showing that perceptual completeness and visual stability—explained by the Gestalt principles of closure, similarity, and continuity—influence affective evaluation. In summary, pixelation and rotation transformations elicited positive emotional responses in aesthetic and playful dimensions, whereas stroke complexity affected only visual saliency. By proposing Chinese character form transformation as a visual strategy for affective communication, this study highlights the integrative research potential between design and cognitive psychology and offers practical implications for applications such as brand identity, exhibition graphics, and user-interface design.
