Abstract

Purpose: As the relationship between environmental consequences and trade openness became an international issue, great effort was attempted consecutively to examine its connection lately. In this respect, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the casual relationships between CO2 emissions with GDP, per capita GDP and trade openness using time series data from 1971 to 2009 in Japan. Design/methodology/approach: The paper explores the empirical question of whether trade openness is beneficial on CO2 emissions in Japan. In particular, the paper focuses on examining the impact of trade openness on CO2 emissions. Further, it uses the ordinary least square methods to examine the scale effect and technology effect with respect to GDP and per capita GDP, respectively. Results/findings: It turns out that most of the variables have the expected signs even though all of them are not statistically significant on CO2 emissions. The results also demonstrate that the scale effect dominates the technology effect. In addition, trade openness and increase in income play an important role in reducing CO2 emissions in Japan. Research implications/limitations: The study shows that the government needs to actively support the natural eco-friendly industry, because it is considered as a growing industry in the future. However, if the paper analyzes the industry level of CO2 emission, rather than the total amount of CO2 emissions, the study could obtain more meaningful results. Future work/research: In the future, by expanding the scope of the present study in terms of investigating Japan's individual industry or transportation industry, the study will achieve more interesting results with respect to change in Japan's recent environmental policy. Originality/value: The paper finds that as trade openness continues to grow, CO2 emissions were reduced. These results are the same as the previous research. Based on these results, it is worthwhile to mention that the paper might contribute to the competitiveness of Korea's by culturing environmental technology in the future.
