Abstract

This study investigated whether consumer characteristics factors affected the consumer’s perceived shopping values of a fashion pop-up store and whether the shopping values affected the consumer’s purchase intention at the store. The selected consumer characteristics include consumer innovativeness, shopping enjoyment, fashion involvement, and needs for uniqueness. The shopping values are classified as either utilitarian values or hedonic values. The sample frame of the study consists of 20-30 years old consumers having experience of visiting fashion pop-up stores. A convenience sample of 279 Koreans and Chinese consumers responded to a survey questionnaire. Path analysis through structural equation model was employed to test research hypotheses. Major findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First, the four consumer characteristics factors influenced hedonic shopping values more than utilitarian values, except the needs for uniqueness. Second, fashion involvement was the strongest in affecting hedonic shopping values, needs for uniqueness the next, and consumer innovativeness, and shopping enjoyment in order. Needs for uniqueness was the strongest in affecting utilitarian shopping values, then fashion involvement, shopping enjoyment, and consumer innovativeness in order. We can note that overall, fashion involvement and needs for uniqueness are critical consumer characteristics variables. Third, utilitarian and hedonic shopping values each positively influenced the consumer’s purchase intention. In terms of size hedonic values had much greater impact than utilitarian values.
