본 연구는 한국에 거주하는 외국인 학습자들의 한국어에 대한 태도에 영향을 미치는 변인에 대해 살펴보는 것을 주된 목적으로 한다. 또한 학습자들의 모국어 배경에 따른 언어태도의 양상을 비교하도록 한다. 이를 위해 수집된 260건의 설문 응답과 후속 인터뷰를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 전체 응답자들의 통합지향과 도구지향 두 영역 모두에서 한국어에 대한 태도가 매우 긍정적인 것으로 나타났다. 능숙도, 학습기간, 성별은 두 영역 모두와 관련이 있었고 특히 학습 목적은 도구 지향적 태도의 주요 변인으로 작용하였다. 학습자의 모국어 배경과 관련하여, 통합 지향적 태도에서는 그룹 간 차이가 없었다. 그러나 영어 모국어 집단의 도구 지향적 태도에 대한 평가가 현저히 낮은 반면 중국어 집단의 경우 눈에 띄게 높게 나타나 두 집단의 태도가 극명하게 대조적인 양상을 보였다. 베트남어 집단은 두 영역 모두에서 비슷하게 긍정적인 양상을 보였다. 이 연구 결과는 특정 언어 환경에 노출되는 정도와 명확한 학습 목적은 능숙도의 향상으로 이어지고, 결국 그 언어에 대한 긍정적인 태도로 나타난다는 것을 시사한다. 또한 학습자들의 국적이나 모국어에 대한 한국인 원어민의 편견 없는 태도가 효과적인 한국어 학습과 긍정적인 언어태도에 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
This study examines the variables that influence the attitudes toward the Korean language of foreign learners residing in Korea. It also explores the differences based on their mother tongue background. To this end, a total of 260 questionnaire responses and follow-up interviews were analyzed. The results portrayed that their attitudes toward Korean were incredibly positive in both integrative and instrumental domains. Proficiency, learning period, and gender were related to both domains, and learning goal was a major variable in instrumental orientation. Concerning mother tongue background, there was no group difference in integrative orientation. English group, however, rated remarkably lower in instrumental attitudes, which stands in stark contrast to the native Chinese. Vietnamese group revealed similar affection in both domains. The findings imply that exposure to the environment and clear goals trigger proficiency, leading to positive attitudes toward the language. It also suggests that the unbiased angle of the native Korean on learners' mother tongue background appeared to play a crucial role in effective Korean language learning and positive attitudes.
