Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to compare students who continue and don’t continue beyond the second-semester Korean course, in terms of their motivational orientations and attitudes toward the target language and community. An open-ended questionnaire was administered to the students in the second-semester Korean course at a Midwestern research university during spring 2012. Content and frequency analysis were conducted at the beginning of fall 2012. The participants’ main motivations to learn Korean were: 1) cultural interest, 2) linguistic interest, 3) desire to communicate with native Korean speakers, 4) desire to visit and live in Korea, and 5) fulfillment of degree requirement. The comparison of the continuing and discontinuing groups revealed that continuing students were motivated more by intrinsic interest in the language/culture and by integrative and ideal-self-related motivations. The attitudes toward the target language and community of the two groups also showed differences: the responses of the continuing students were more diverse and profound, while those of the discontinuing students were rather limited and superficial.
