이 연구는 학교교육의 적절한 목적을 위해 공감적 도덕성 함양을 저해하는 학교교육의 제약요인과 그것을 극복하기 위한 대안을 모색하는 데 있다. 공감은 타인의 정서, 감정, 그리고 상황을 올바로 지각하고 소중하게 여기며, 그리고 이런 특별한 체험은 타인과 그의 필요를 이해하도록 한다. 그러나 그것은 도덕적 판단을 하거나 준거로서는 불충분하다. 왜냐하면 공감은 규범적 원리라기보다는 심리적 경험으로 한정될 가능성이 있기 때문이다. 공감의 정서적 내용은 도덕적으로 가장 중요할 요소일도 있고, 아니면 이와 무관한 요소가 될 수도 있다. 도덕적 이슈에 대한 비판적 사고가 없는 공감을 함양하는 교육일 경우 잘못 오도될 수도 있다. 그러기에 공감과 도덕성을 연계시키는 ‘공감적 도덕성’을 필요로 한다. 학교는 학생들의 공감적 도덕성을 발달시킬 책임이 있다. 이를 위해 교육자들은 공감적 도덕성의 함양을 위한 교육적 원리가 요구된다. 그렇지만, 오늘의 학교는 아이들의 도덕성 형성에 미치는 공감적 능력의 함양에 한계가 있다. 그 한계는 학교교육의 제약(구조, 교수‧학습 방법, 교육과정)에서 오는 것이다. 따라서 이 연구는 공감적 도덕성을 제약하는 학교교육의 요인과 그것을 극복하고자 하는 홀리스틱 교육의 방향을 제시하고자 한다.
Abstract
The aim of this study is to seek for the holistic alternatives to cultivate the empathic morality in schooling. Empathy involves feeling another’s pain or stepping ito another person’s shoes. Empathy enables us to more accurately perceive and appreciate others’ emotions, feelings, and situation and such unique experiences facilitate our understanding of others and their needs. Nevertheless, it is not a cure for the human condition. Empathy alone is insufficient and undesirable as a sole moral criterion and guide. For it is a psychological experience, not a normative principle. The emotional content of empathy is what makes either moraly salient or morally irrelevant. Cultivating empathy without cultivating critical thinking on moral issues would be misguided and counterproductive. Thus, it seems that empathy may not serve as criterion of morally good action. Therefore, we would require empathetic morality fusing empathy and ethics. Schools are primarily responsible for students’ empathic development. Empathy is very important in moral judgement. However, schools have limitations on their emphatic abilities to affect children’s lives. These limitations stem from constrains of schooling(school structures, pedagogy, curriculum). We need to provide the direction of holistic education to overcome the these limitations.
