타인의 고통에 대해 관심을 기울이고, 그에 적절하게 반응하는 공감은 도덕적 행위를 촉발하는 주요한 동기로서 작용한다. 이처럼 공감은 도덕성의 정의적 측면을 대표하는 핵심 요소로서 인간의 도덕 발달에 있어서 중요한 역할을 한다. 공감은 타인의 상황이나 정서에 대한 인식에 토대하여 타인의 정서나 상황을 함께 느끼고 경험하는 것으로 정의할 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 이러한 공감 개념에 기초하여 도덕교육을 통한 공감 발달 방안을 모색하는 데 목적을 두고 논의를 전개하였다. 먼저 Hoffman을 포함한 많은 공감 이론가들의 연구 결과에 기초하여, 공감은 그 각성 양식 및 인지 발달에 상응하여 전반적 공감, 자기중심적 공감, 타인의 감정에 대한 공감, 타인의 삶의 조건에 대한 공감 단계로 발달해 간다는 것을 논의하였다. 이어서 공감은 자연적인 성숙과 함께 사회화 및 도덕교육을 통해서도 더 잘 발달될 수 있다는 관점에 토대하여 학교에서의 도덕교육을 통한 공감 발달 방법을 제안해 보았다. 이와 함께 공감 발달을 위한 다양한 도덕교육 방안을 교육과정, 교사 역할, 실제 수업 방법이라는 세 가지 측면에서 모색해 보았다. 마지막으로 공감 및 공감 발달이 갖는 도덕교육적 시사점을 찾아 제시해 보았다.
Abstract
The Purpose of this study is to propose the methods of moral education for the development of empathy and to investigate its implications for moral education. First, I define empathy as a vicarious emotional response based on the apprehension of another’s emotional state or concern for the other. Secondly, I examine Hoffman’s theory on the development of empathy. Hoffman identifies five different modes through which the various emotional response is aroused. He hypothesized four developmental levels of empathy. Thirdly, I examine the process of development of empathy. Although empathy may develop naturally in most humans, this development may be enhanced through socialization and moral education. In particular, empathetic modeling, inductive discipline, role taking ability are playing an important role in developing an empathy. Finally, I suggest the methods of moral education for the development of empathy and its meaning in moral education.
