Abstract

This paper examines the dynamics of diplomatic, commercial, and cultural interactions between the Timurid Empire and the Ming dynasty, focusing on the circulation of porcelain during the 14th and 15th centuries. Blue-and-white porcelains produced in early Ming China were transmitted to the Timurid Empire through systems of tribute and reciprocal gifts, and served not merely as utilitarian objects but as visual symbols of political authority and cultural prestige. The porcelain artifacts and pictorial representations discovered in cities such as Samarkand, Herat, and Shiraz reveal the active reception and use of Ming official wares within the Timurid realm. The fact that blue-and-white porcelain produced within the Timurid Empire closely imitated the 'official style' (guanyang, 官樣) of the Ming imperial court can be interpreted as an intentional appropriation by the Timurids of the authority and symbolism inherent in Chinese blue-and-white ware for their own political and cultural purposes. This serves as an important case demonstrating how the technological and aesthetic authority of Chinese ceramics was appropriated and reinterpreted within the Islamic world. The dissemination and reception of Ming dynasty ceramics occurred through multiple channels, including tributary trade between the two empires, the commercial activities of Muslim merchants, and the exchange of diplomatic gifts via official delegations. Such multifaceted routes of interaction shed light on the practical mechanisms of the Silk Road trade network and offer concrete insights into the dynamics of cultural exchange during this period. By focusing on the Timurid Empire—an area long marginalized in the Sinocentric narrative of ceramic history—this study aims to shed light on the multi-layered nature of East–West cultural exchange and the interactive dynamics of Eurasian art history, with porcelain as a key medium.
