Abstract

This study analyzes the iconography of postmortem judgment as depicted in Manichaean paintings from the Turpan and Zhejiang regions, with the aim of exploring the distinctive Manichaean conception of the afterlife, its unique judgment system, and the ways in which these ideas are visually rendered. Rooted in a dualistic worldview, Manichaean art functioned as a kind of “visual scripture,” embodying complex theological concepts such as reincarnation, the liberation of light, judgment, the mirror, and testimonial structures. In judgment scenes, humans appear alongside animals, plants, and mirrors, forming a symbolic framework that determines the fate of the soul. This process is not merely retributive but forms part of a salvific journey back to the world of light. Manichaeism emphasizes a qualitative approach to moral judgment, relying on mirrors and the testimony of other beings to assess one’s actions. Here, sin is not seen simply as an ethical failure, but as a disruption of the cosmic order. The structure of Manichaean judgment bears notable similarities to that found in the Chinese Buddhist Ten Kings (Shiwangdo) tradition. Although the Manichaean judgment is imagined as occurring in the atmospheric realm, while Buddhist judgment takes place in the underworld, both traditions regard the judgment space as a pivotal turning point within the cycle of reincarnation. Furthermore, the appearance of animal motifs in the transformation tableaux of the Ten Kings Sutra at Dunhuang can be interpreted as influenced by Manichaean visual traditions. This reading is supported by the fact that, in the Manichaean view of the afterlife, animals, humans, and mirrors are interconnected within an organically unified narrative structure, whereas in Buddhist Shiwangdo imagery, the relationship between the karmic mirror (yeopgyeongdae) and animals is relatively weak.
