Abstract

In Yun Dong-ju’s early poetry, the Christian notion of self-sacrifice appears within the environment of primary identification, taking the form of vicarious sacrifice. While biblical narratives of sacrifice are nominally invoked under the influence of cultural surroundings, they are in practice configured as structures of substitution. Seoul, where Yun moved for his studies, became the site where he encountered colonial oppression—an environment of secondary identification characterized by direct confrontation with an aggressive Other. From this point, his poetry increasingly reveals modes of Christian self-sacrifice. In works such as Untitled (Mu-je) and Record of Repentance (Chamhoe-rok), self-sacrifice remains within a religious dimension, yet lacks clear markers distinguishing it as resistance against colonial power. Gradually, however, Yun accommodates political reality within the framework of religious sacrifice. This trajectory reaches a decisive turning point in the matter of textual control under colonial rule. In Cross (Sipjaga), the effacement of the “sound of the bell” signifies not merely the loss of an auditory image but the erasure of national spirit itself. Under conditions in which self-expression through script—particularly Hangul—was suppressed, the poet faced the threat of losing the very ground of his literary expression. For Yun, the will to linguistic freedom functioned as a crucial element in shaping both national identity and resistance consciousness. Acknowledging that publication of his poetry was impossible under Japanese occupation, he nevertheless persisted in writing works whose resistance seemed ineffective in practical terms. If the colonial condition of textual suppression provoked Yun’s resistant acts, then these very acts, in turn, guarantee the historical authenticity of the literary representation of script.
