Abstract
This study examines a Japanese language classroom activity using the elementary level textbook Minna no Nihongo and explicates what is done in the interaction between its participants and what is taught/learned from the perspective of Bakhtinian “dialogue.” Through analyzing the classroom discourse that was initiated by a discrepancy in metapragmatic descriptions of a sentence pattern between the teacher and the textbook, this study aims to present a new conceptualization of practices of language teaching and learning for a proper understanding of them. In the Japanese language class analyzed in this study, the teacher, having noticed that her instruction conflicts with the textbook, followed the instructions of the textbook on the one hand, while retained her own explanations on the other. By avoiding explicit mentions of the discrepancy, she managed to prevent the asymmetric “dialogical relationship” between her and the textbook from manifesting itself. However, in response to a student's question pointing out the discrepancy, the teacher was forced to clarify her inferior position to the textbook. This led her to lose the consistency of her explanations and to partially deny the meaning of their classroom activities so far. Moreover, as a consequence of this, a metapragmatic description that is different from what either the teacher or the textbook originally intended was brought about. Based on the above, this study argues that classroom activities using a textbook are the process of “dialogue” between the teacher, the students, and the textbook, and what is taught and learned is formed through the contingency of it. This suggests the importance of examining various “dialogues” in practices of language teaching and learning in future studies.
