Abstract
This report analyses and considers the discussion process of students in advanced Japanese grammar lessons using the flipped classroom strategy. The subjects were 16 students taking advanced Japanese language classes as a preparatory course at a certain university. Comparisons were made between two groups of students deemed to be “not very confident speakers” and two groups deemed to be “relatively confident speakers.” Students’ engagement in exercises during the second session of a total of 35 sessions was filmed and analyzed. With reference to Berkowitz and Gibbs’ (1983) transactive discussion (TD) analysis, the method of analysis was to observe how representational and operational transaction occurred as the students came to understand the lesson content. Operational transaction is said to play an important role in discussion and has an impact on the interaction. TD classification items based on those determined in earlier studies were used and were adjusted to reflect the unique characteristics of Japanese language grammar lessons. The analysis revealed that the representational transaction was very common in student discussions. There were also cases where operational transaction was seen, without active discussion, and correct answers were reached. Furthermore, it was found that students did not always reach the correct answer as a result of operational transaction. From the viewpoint of grammar learning, some students did not get the right answer and did not attain the desired understanding. However, within the broader framework of Japanese learning, interaction related to understanding was facilitated, such as interpretation of vocabulary and evaluation of other students’ utterance.
