Abstract
This study aims to construct a foundational theoretical framework for an “AI poetics” that treats AI-generated texts not as auxiliary phenomena subordinate to existing literary theory, but as autonomous objects of analysis in their own right. Traditional poetics, grounded in assumptions about the human author’s interiority, intention, and lived experience, is ill-equipped to account for the conditions of existence of AI texts, which are produced through probabilistic computation and large-scale data training. Drawing on the insights of Butler, Laclau, and Žižek, this study proposes an analytical framework consisting of three categories: probabilistic plausibility (conditions of generation), data hegemony (structural constraints), and performative universality (aesthetic effects). First, because large language models generate outputs through chains of probabilistic selections based on data distributions, meaning arises not from pre-given intention but from a field of conditioned possibilities. Second, the datasets on which AI models are trained constitute discursive fields marked by specific cultural, linguistic, and power structures; the style, themes, and forms of AI poetry thus remain subject to the influence of data hegemony. Third, AI texts acquire their literary status as processual events emerging from the interaction among human, machine, and text; the ruptural qualities that surface in errors, contradictions, and hallucinations function as performative universality insofar as they invite critical engagement from readers. The case study analyzes poems generated using ChatGPT-5, focusing on its reproduction of archetypal narrative structures and stylistic imitation of specific poets. The analysis illustrates how probabilistic plausibility produces an aesthetic of the average, and how data hegemony reduces the complexity of certain authors into safe symbolic systems. These findings suggest that AI poetry is not merely an imitation of human creativity; rather, through the unfamiliar nonhuman logic made visible by its generative mechanisms, it opens a space for new modes of thought. Synthesizing these discussions, the study presents AI poetics as an open theoretical project that expands and transforms human-centered aesthetics.
