Abstract

This paper examined the nature and role of literary art in the era of Generative AI by fundamentally reviewing the current problematic situation caused by the emergence of Generative AI through the specific field of poetry literature as a humanistic response to Generative AI that has recently attracted attention. Starting with asking questions about the mechanism of Generative AI, this paper focused on understanding the situation more clearly by reviewing the recent discussions. In addition, this study examined poetry and poetry as a whole and how Generative AIs respond to problematic situations in society. In particular, it considered how students would have an attitude toward 'outsourcing of thinking' that would be a problem in the educational field. In the era of Generative AI, poetry education should be established as a process in which students feel that they should be the subject of thinking on their own by comparing AI-generated poetry with emergent poetry, along with the work of clearly identifying AI's structural characteristics and limitations. Furthermore, this paper asked what is poetry (literature) in this era of Generative AI. Here, in particular, the nature of human poetry's emergent nature was considered by referring to the case of cognitive science. This was required in the process of contemplating how Generative AIs can coexist in the field of poetry reading and writing education. Finally, this study suggested the role of poetry (writing) in the era of AI by paying attention to poetry as an act for 'self-healing'. I think such research will provide an opportunity for reflection in response to various problem situations caused by the emergence of Generative AIs in the academic and educational fields.
