Abstract

This paper explores the aesthetic possibilities of the hallucination phenomenon in generative artificial intelligence from a creative perspective, by comparing and analyzing it with the characteristics of poetic language, rather than dismissing it merely as a technical flaw. AI hallucination refers to the presentation of information different from facts or fictional content as if it were real, and this paper notes that this is structurally similar to the essential elements of poetic language and the principles of creativity. Research findings have been presented suggesting that AI hallucination is a complex phenomenon arising from the processes of data collection, model training, and text generation, and that it is difficult to completely eliminate due to the inherent characteristics of large language models. The inevitability of AI hallucination provides a basis for shifting its consideration from an object of engineering control to a domain of aesthetic inquiry. Poetic language aims to go beyond information delivery to evoke emotions, create multi-layered meanings, and offer readers novel sensory experiences. Poetry secures a plurality of meanings through pseudo-statements, connotation, and ambiguity, while simultaneously developing unfamiliar horizons that contradict existing perceptions through poetic devices like metaphors—a process of defamiliarization. These characteristics of poetic language share common principles with AI hallucination, such as the departure from factual denotation, irrational generation, plurality of meaning, transformation of perception, and the creation of novelty. Based on these similarities, this paper interprets AI hallucination as a form of digital automatism. It is a result derived not from the human unconscious but from the statistical patterns of data, which can be seen as a manifestation of a digital collective unconscious and an implementation of a digital surrealism distinct from human creativity. Ultimately, poetic innovation in the age of artificial intelligence is not aimed at developing a perfectly autonomous AI poet, but at establishing a critical collaborative relationship between the human (un)conscious and the machine's unique algorithms. The collaborative project between Charles Bernstein and Davide Balula is a representative example that shows significant poetic possibilities. The poet performs a multi-layered role of selecting the machine's outputs, bestowing artistic order upon them, and undertaking legal and ethical responsibilities. Such a partnership demands that creativity be redefined as a distributed process that emerges from the interaction between human and non-human agents.
