Abstract

This paper analyzes the way birth and death, subject and other, sublimity and disgust form a dynamic interdependent state through the analysis of the abject in Kim Hye-soon’s poetry. Kim Hye-soon’s poetry constantly attempts symbolic stasis and movement of dominant social codes or instances. In “When the Earth Dies, Who Will the Moon Revolve Around?”, Kim Hye-soon’s unique poetry, which is adept at devices of violation and inversion, is expressed through abjection. The core materials of this collection, “mother,” “death,” and “filth,” are representative objects that Kristeva designated as abjects, and in Kim Hye -soon’s poetry, these elements lose their symbolic status and are immediately transferred into a new system. Kim Hye-soon’s poetry and Kristeva’s theory of abjection are closely related in that they capture the inherent mobility (motile) of the oppressive signifying form and focus on the ‘between’, ‘boundary’, and ‘process’. In this study, we reinterpret Kim Hye-soon’s poems from the perspective of ‘loss of existence and formation of subjectivity’, which has not been discussed, rather than the general theme of ‘solidarity of sorrow’ that is tied to this collection of poems. Kristeva’s abjection forms subjectivity through repeated discrimination, rejection, and disobedience, whereas Kim Hye-soon’s poetry evokes subjectivity through confusion, return, and fusion. By politically discussing the core elements of Kim Hye-soon’s poetry, such as negativity, otherness, and feminine speech form, by citing Julia Kristeva’s theory of abjection, we can present a new reading method to trace the special meaning of this collection of poems, which is a meaningful achievement of this study.
