Abstract
This study explores the impact of a one-year study abroad program on the development of intercultural communicative competence (ICC) among 17 students from a technical college in southern Taiwan. These students participated in exchange programs at partner institutions in Japan. Taiwan’s technical colleges integrate vocational and higher education and aim to cultivate students’ expertise, global perspectives, and language skills. The research analyzed students’ reflective reports submitted after their exchange program. Using qualitative content analysis, the study identified five key areas of growth: enhanced confidence in Japanese language use, deeper intercultural understanding, improved interpersonal adaptability, heightened self-awareness, and clearer future aspirations. Results showed that students developed greater cultural flexibility and a comparative perspective on their own culture. Many demonstrated stronger initiative in communication and decision-making, even under challenging circumstances. Several expressed interest in returning to Japan for further study or pursuing careers in Japanese-related industries, indicating a transformation in their career goals. This study highlights the educational value of long-term exchange programs in technical colleges. Such experiences not only promote language acquisition and intercultural awareness but also contribute to students’ personal growth and career planning. The findings suggest that study abroad should be further integrated into vocational curricula to support holistic student development.
