Abstract
This paper aims to reexamine and refine the grammatical descriptions of the Japanese change-of-state expressions ‘-yō ni naru’ and ‘-koto ni naru’ by analyzing common misuse patterns among Korean learners of Japanese. Specifically, the study investigates learners’ actual usage of these constructions and identifies discrepancies between existing explanations in Japanese grammar reference books and the errors observed among learners. The analysis reveals that the most frequent misuse of ‘-yō ni naru’ was its unnecessary application, followed by cases where learners used ‘-yō ni naru’ instead of ‘-koto ni naru’. There were also instances where the potential form should have been used instead. Similarly, for ‘-koto ni naru’, the most common error was its unnecessary use, along with cases where learners incorrectly substituted ‘-koto ni suru’ or ‘-yō ni naru’. These findings suggest that Korean learners experience difficulties in acquiring Japanese change-of-state constructions because both ‘-yō ni naru’ and ‘-koto ni naru’ correspond to the Korean expression ‘-게 되다’, which has a broader scope of usage in Korean. The structural differences between the two languages can thus lead to confusion and fossilization of misuse. Based on these analyses, this paper reviews the descriptions of these forms in existing Japanese grammar resources and proposes a revised framework that incorporates the typical error patterns identified among Korean learners. The goal is to provide grammatical information that proactively addresses points of confusion and helps prevent misuse in actual language use. It is hoped that future studies will further develop practical grammatical explanations that support learners in overcoming these common difficulties.
