Abstract

This study aims to examine the Japanese expressions corresponding to the Korean grammatical construction “-ke toeda”, identify the similarities and differences between the two languages, and clarify the semantic and structural characteristics of each expression. The motivation for this research lies in the frequent misuse of change-of-state constructions by Korean learners of Japanese. Focusing on the Korean expression “-ke toeda,” the study analyzes its functional equivalents in Japanese. The findings of the analysis are as follows. First, while the Korean “-ke toeda” can be attached to verbs expressing single, instantaneous actions or states without a clear process of change, such usages are difficult to render using Japanese change-of-state expressions. Second, when “-ke toeda” expresses gradual change, repetition, or continuous action, it is typically translated into Japanese using “-yō ni naru.” Third, in contexts where “-ke toeda” conveys decisions, developments of events, or resulting conclusions, the Japanese expression “-koto ni naru” serves as an equivalent. However, it is less appropriate for expressing meanings such as schedules, habits, rules, or counterfactual recognition. Fourth, when “-ke toeda” implies involuntary realization or gradual transformation, Japanese expressions such as “-te shimau” and “-te kuru” may be used, while “-te hajimeru” can express the initiation or onset of change. Additionally, when the Korean form implies passive or potential meanings, the corresponding Japanese expressions are “-(ra)reru” and “dekiru,” respectively. In cases where the Korean “-ke toeda” is used to express a deliberate decision, “-koto ni suru” may be an appropriate Japanese equivalent. Based on these findings, this study aims to contribute to the development of teaching and learning materials for more effective Japanese language education by systematically analyzing learner errors in change-of-state constructions and offering practical grammatical explanations tailored to Korean learners of Japanese.
