Abstract
This study aims to examine how learners understand Japanese grammatical items and apply them in actual writing activities, thereby exploring how grammar instruction influences their expressive abilities. The participants were students majoring in Japanese, who received explanations on specific grammar points during class and then completed fill-in-the-blank writing tasks utilizing the target grammar. The grammar items analyzed were six in total: demonstratives, compound particles, nominalization expressions, directional verb expressions (e.g., ~てくる), volitional expressions (~ことにする), and giving/receiving expressions (あげる・くれる・もらう). Learners’ responses were analyzed not only in terms of accuracy but also in terms of typical misuse patterns and errors stemming from conceptual differences between Korean and Japanese. In particular, clear tendencies of misuse were found in items such as contextual demonstratives, directional expressions, and giving/receiving expressions, which both support previous studies and provide new analytical insights. This study is significant in that it investigates the gap between grammatical acquisition and practical use through learners’ output. Future research should incorporate more multifaceted and in-depth analyses, including learners’ intentions behind expression choices, internal awareness, and cultural backgrounds. Furthermore, an integrated approach is needed that goes beyond item-by-item analysis to consider contextual use, feedback strategies, and links to instructional methods in educational settings.
