Abstract
This study explores universal and individual features in second language speech acts by comparing the refusal strategies used in emails by intermediate Korean and Chinese learners of Japanese with those of native Japanese speakers. Participants consisted of 62 Korean learners, 52 Chinese learners, and 48 native Japanese speakers. The findings first showed that the strategy of expressing a “favorable attitude toward the request” did not differ significantly among the three groups, suggesting that this feature is widely shared regardless of linguistic or cultural background. In addition, intermediate learners displayed frequencies of “refusal utterances” and “reasons for refusal” comparable to those of native speakers, indicating that the acquisition of core refusal strategies had reached a relatively stable stage. Second, regarding individual differences, Korean learners used “refusal utterances” and “reasons for refusal” significantly more often than Chinese learners, with the largest gap observed in the “reasons for refusal” category. Chinese learners, by contrast, employed the “regret over refusal” strategy less frequently than native speakers. Both Korean and Chinese learners used the “apology” and “favorable feelings toward the teacher” strategies more often than native speakers. The notably high frequency of the “apology” strategy pointed to a shared characteristic of their interlanguage systems. Korean learners also used the “suggestion” strategy most frequently among the three groups, reflecting an individual pattern shaped by cultural speech norms. Overall, these results suggest that the refusal strategies of intermediate second language learners reflect both culturally influenced individual tendencies and universally observed patterns in L2 speech act development. The study offers insights into the multilayered structure of interlanguage in research on second language pragmatics.
