Abstract

This study analyzed the refusal speech act of Korean Japanese learners and native Japanese speakers according to their proficiency level. And the use of pause along with the main refusal strategy shown in the refusal speech act was examined from the perspective of the learner's language acquisition. The overall results are summarized as follows. First, the number of direct semantic phrases decreased when learners used the refusal strategy from beginner to advanced. And the composition of the refusal strategy showed a similar pattern to that of the native Japanese speaker. Second, the types of sub-refusal strategies increased and diversified as they progressed toward advanced learners. However, they showed stable usage of sub-refusal strategies according to individuals. Third, the reason why native Japanese speakers preferred and the content of the filler sub-refusal strategy increased as they progressed toward advanced learners, showing a similar pattern to native Japanese speakers. Fourth, for native Japanese speakers, a certain amount of time was secured when the central refusal utterance started and then uttered. It showed the aspect of using the element of time. However, it did not stand out for learners.
