This study explored the characteristics of textbooks as composed text and analyzed sentence description in 『language and media』 textbooks from an interpersonal perspective. Specifically, it closely analyzed the writers’ interpersonal attempts in the domain of educational content, focusing on “engagement system” in textbooks based on the appraisal theory of Martin and White(2005). The analysis identified engagement resources in Korean sentences that were prominent in the textbooks and thus confirmed the writers’ presuppositions regarding learners as readers. Furthermore, it was found that language markers and functions performed differently as engagement resources depending on the rhetorical context and writers’ interpersonal attempts, rather than in a one-to-one manner. Their function as an engagement resource is not simply contrasted with the concept of “expand” and “contract,” but is selected on the spectrum according to the authors’ intentions. This study visualized the system of engagement resources as a spectrum and categorized them into four types: “expanding resources to impose obligations,” “expanding resources to present attitudes,” “expanding-contracting resources to refute conventions and suggest opinions,” and “contracting resources to emphasize statements.”
