Abstract
In this study, we tried to analyze texts containing subjective vocabulary for emotions, people, and objects in the high school science history textbooks of 2015 revised curriculum. To this end, the text of the 'Science and Modern Society' section of two textbooks was analyzed using Martin & White's appraisal systems, which is one of the methods of systematic functional linguistics. Based on this, the frequency of use of the appraisal according to the unit, the detailed usage patterns of the appraisal according to the evaluation subject and evaluation target were confirmed. In addition we tried to understand the author’s descriptive intention through the context in which the Appraisal was used. The two textbooks showed different aspects of the Appraisal used because there was a difference in elements such as the number of texts and the number of words in the text depending on the section. However, the type of Appraisal that reveal the Affects of a person showed low frequencies in both textbooks. In addition, in terms of the subject of evaluation, the author's evaluation was described with the highest frequency. The author was able to confirm that he wanted to form a relationship with the reader in various ways, such as strengthening the intention to convey by using these resources, or forming a space for other opinions.
