초록
The purpose of this study is to examine the avoidance of indirect speech among intermediate and high-level Korean language learners. In order to confirm the avoidance of indirect speech, two experiments were conducted: free conversation, and answering by looking at pictures. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that all participants avoided using direct speech in free conversation, and in the answering by looking at pictures experiment, they avoided indirect speech using various strategies such as message abandonment, message reduction, addition, paraphrasing, and requesting assistance. The avoidance of indirect speech appeared regardless of the learner's native language and proficiency. In the interview that examined the causes of avoidance of indirect speech, they answered that Korean indirect speech was difficult and complicated, thus they decided not to use it but to avoid it. In addition, it was revealed that learners might be affected by personal disposition and the knowledge of L2 that they already had.
