Abstract
This study aims to explore the parts that sixth-grade elementary school students find impressive when appreciating poetry and to analyze the types and characteristics of their perceptions of such parts using Q methodology. A total of 25 statements that could represent impressive parts of poems were presented, and based on the Q-sort results of 21 sixth-grade students, five types of perception were extracted. Students belonging to Type 1 understood poetry mainly through the emotions of the characters or through experiences similar to their own. Students in Type 2 tended to regard emotional resonance, reflection, and new actions and thoughts as impressive parts. Students in Type 3 perceived as impressive those parts in which they could actively interpret, empathize, and explore meanings. Students in Type 4 considered imaginative or unrealistic parts, where they could construct meaning through imagination rather than reflection, empathy, or interpretation, as impressive. Students belonging to Type 5 deeply immersed themselves in the emotions and events of the characters and tended to construct meaning through repeated expressions or central words. These results provide a foundation for learner-centered literature education and are significant in that they can serve as a basis for the selection of poetic texts and the design of teaching and learning methods.
