Abstract
This study aims to analyze how learners understand ‘authors’ and ‘author’ s intention’ by applying teaching and learning strategies centered on ‘author ’ s intention’ in elementary literature classrooms. By applying author study lessons conducted in English-speaking cultures to elementary school students and analyzing teaching and learning cases related to ‘author’ s intention’ , the following patterns emerged. First, learners inferred the author’ s intention, compared their thoughts with those of the author and other readers, and gained a deeper understanding of the work. Second, learners expanded their self-reflection by connecting the author to themselves in their thinking. Third, through communication between the author, the work, and the reader, learners reproduced the meaning of the work, actively enjoyed literature by seeking out and reading other books by the author. The following implications can be drawn from the teaching and learning examples of ‘author’ s intention’ in elementary literature education. First, author education in elementary literature education should be structured to organically connect the author, the work, the reader, and the social and cultural context, and ‘the author ’ s intention’ should be understood from a comprehensive perspective that encompasses the author’ s life, values, and creative context. Second, teachers should encourage active author exploration by allowing learners to take the lead, rather than limiting their diverse interpretations of works.
