혈통주의적 ‘내선일체’를 통해서 본 만주와 만주국 ― 일제 말 만주를 재현한 장혁주의 작품을 중심으로 ―

장혁주는 ‘오족협화’가 주된 이념이었던 만주국을 다루면서 철저하게 ‘내선일체’의 입장에서 서 있었다. 그로서는 ‘오족협화’ 속에서 자신의 정체성을 찾고자 했던 만주국의 조선인들에 대해서 깊은 불만을 가지고 있었고 이러한 소설 쓰기를 통하여 이주조선인들이 일본 신민으로서의 정체성을 갖고 살기를 희망하였다. ‘내선일체’와 ‘오족협화’의 길항 속에서 글을 썼던 장혁주는 이주 조선인들을 하나라도 ‘내선일체’의 품으로 끌어들이는 것이 자신의 작가적 책무라고 생각했던 것이다.건국 이전의 어려운 시절에 조선인들을 구해주고 그들에게 땅을 마련해준 것도 일본인이었고, 개척의 난관을 뚫고 땅을 공동으로 경작하여 갱생하게 해준 데도 일본인들의 역할이 핵심적이다.『개간』과『행복한 백성』은 바로 이러한 작가적 노력의 산물이었다.『개간』만주국 성립 이전을 시간적 배경으로 하여 조선인들이 일본인과 함께 어려운 난관을 극복해 나가는 이야기이다. 장학량 정부 수립 이후 중국은 조선인을 일본제국주의 침략의 선두부대로 간주하였기에 강한 탄압을 하였다. 조선인들을 중국 관헌의 압박에 시달린 나머지 결국 일본인들에게 도움을 청하게 되고 이 과정에서 피로 맺어진 ‘내선일체’를 실감하는 것으로 설정되어 있다.『행복한 백성』은 만주국 성립 이후 조선인들이 일본인과 더불어 행복한 낙원을 만들어 가는 것에 관한 이야기이다. 조선인들도 창씨개명을 하면서 일본인처럼 되어 갈 뿐만 아니라 일본인의 문화를 체득하여 궁극적으로 일본인으로서 잘 살아가는 과정을 그리고 있다. 이 두 작품은 조선인들이 완전한 일본인이 되어 만주와 만주국에서 자작농으로 불편 없이 살아가는 것이 조선인들의 가장 옳은 길이라고 보고 있는 것이다. 그런 점에서 장혁주는 주관적으로는 조선인들의 처지를 개선하기 위하여 노력하였지만 결국은 조선인들의 해소를 통한 일본인 되기에 지나지 않는 것이었다.
Abstract
Korean novelist Chang-Hyukjoo wrote two novels about Manchria and Manchukuo under the late colonial period of Japanese Empire. The Novel titled Cultivation(1943) dealt with Korean peasants who live in Manchuria before the Manchukuo. At that time Chinese government in Manchuria regards them as the spy or advance party of Japanese Empire, so they push them out from Manchuria. Korean peasants can not but lean over Japanese authority or embassy to survive in the Manchuria. Chang regards it as the solidarity between Korean and Japanese originated from ancient time. Another novel titled An Happy People dealt with Korean peasants who live in Manchuria after construction of Manchukuo. At that time, Korean people in Manchukuo are regarded as one important ethnic group of Manchukuo rather than Japanese in the middle of policy of harmony of five races. Chang regards korean people as Japanese citizen according to the Oneness of Korean and Japanese. He ignored the identity of Korean. There is the tension between Oneness of Korean and Japanese and Harmony of five races in the time of Manchukuo. Chan selected the Oneness of Korean and Japanese rather than the Harmony of five races. He made every efforts to overcome the poverty of Korean peasants who have not their own land. But It failed because he believed that Korean is the same ethnic with Japanese.
