Abstract

This Article discusses Jang Hyok-ju’s novel about Koreans living in Japan during the colonial period. The research perspective is racism. The reason for analyzing from a racism perspective is that it allows for the analysis of the forces that make discrimination possible. Criticism of direct violence is necessary. However, from a racism perspective, even actions that appear to be “polite” or “anti-discrimination” can be analyzed as a form of discrimination. The novel “U-su-in-saeng” depicts blatant discrimination against Koreans. However, it also depicts various other forms of discrimination against Koreans. These include the seemingly kind words of a school teacher, and the internalization of discrimination that occurs when the protagonist endures bullying. The novel depicts relationships in which Koreans are constantly objectified and hierarchized, as well as Japanization, which tries to make this non-existent. This is by no means the creation of equality. Furthermore, the boy fears that he will be exposed as Korean at any moment. The boy has a presentiment of this fear. Jang Hyok-ju’s “Iwamoto Volunteer” is a propaganda novel written just before Japan’s defeat in the war. In this novel, conscription is interpreted as the fulfillment of a Korean man’s dream. However, this also means that conscription was a barrier for Koreans living in Japan. In other words, it was a wall that prevented them from looking forward to the future. Therefore, the novel interprets conscription as allowing Koreans to live with dignity in Japan. The novel depicts an indiscriminate relationship between Japanese and Koreans, but this was only possible by Koreans hiding their Korean identity. Through “Iwamoto Volunteer,” Jang Hyuk-ju depicts a world where discrimination has been eliminated and Koreans can live with dignity. However, this only applies to young men who can become soldiers. Most other Koreans are not saved, even in propaganda novels, as in the structure of brotherhoods. At first glance, the Japanese who treat Koreans in Jang Hyuk-ju’s novel appear to be kind, as if there is no discrimination. However, from the perspective of racism, this is nothing more than the reproduction of discrimination.
