Abstract

In general, we use ‘Development’ to mean ‘changing into a better state’ in sociocultural, political, and economic dimensions, and in that sense, the concept cannot but be value laden. However, there is a strong tendency to understand it as narrowly defined economic growth following the western model of industrialization which is quantitatively evaluated. This tendency has detrimental effects on local subsistence economy and has worsened women’s situation in many parts of the world. While capitalist economics has defined humans as rational beings seeking self-interest, we need to bring in the concept of ‘Homo Donan’ to have a better understanding of ourselves, since we would not have survived without the practice of unilateral giving. This study attempts to help reconstruct development from a feminist perspective. It examines critiques of feminist development theories and post-development discussions, and explores visions of care economics and gift economy that raise fundamental questions about the capitalist market economy and development. The concept of development ought to be based on a better understanding of human beings and that will bring about a new epistemological framework for development.
